Aurora Rise is a nonprofit dedicated to helping the survivors of the July 20, 2012, Aurora Theater Shooting and remembering those who we lost that night.

A few months ago, Aurora Rise launched a campaign to have a new Group Special License Plate created for the State of Colorado. Proceeds collected from the plate will support other victims of crime in Colorado through the state's Victim Compensation Fund. Aurora Rise proposes to have an extra $25 a year go towards the fund, per plate, per year.

THE GOAL:

The plate needs at least 3,000 signatures from Colorado vehicle owners before it can be submitted to the Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles for approval in order to move on to the State Legislature. As of June 10th, Aurora Rise has obtained 400 signatures since launching their public campaign in late February. This includes a 10-week break in promotion due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Colorado's Division of Motor Vehicles has authorized Aurora Rise efforts, and the Office of Victim Programs is aware and supportive of them. State Rep. Tom Sullivan, the father of victim Alex Sullivan, has agreed to sponsor the plate once it reaches the State Legislature.

THE PROPOSED DESIGN:

The proposed license plate design has a blue/navy blue ribbon, which is often used for victim's rights. In the sky are 13 stars commemorating the 12 people killed and one unborn that was lost on July 20, 2012. In the center of the ribbon is "WE RISE." Not only does this have meaning for those associated with the theater, but for anyone recovering from the aftermath of a criminal's actions.

*Please note that the license plate design has not been finalized.

"For seven years we've seen the generosity of Colorado and beyond in helping the victims of the Aurora theater shooting. But many other victims of crime in Colorado are also trying to recover from the worst experiences of their lives. With this plate, we can rise together and help them." -Aurora Rise Board Members
