Dear Friends,
You are cordially invited to participate in Kick-Start Your Creativity!, a generative writing workshop. Space is limited! Please respond if you are interested in attending to confirm space is still available. For six weeks, September 3 – October 8, 2019, Tuesdays, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., we will engage in dynamic, generative writing in response to multiple types of prompts in every session. This workshop is intended for writers at all levels of experience, and in all genres, and is tailored so you can choose to focus on one specific genre or experiment with different genres each session through craft-driven writing prompts. We will explore starting points, techniques, and resources for poetry, flash-fiction, flash non-fiction, dialogue, and collaborative writing. If you already have a longer writing project in progress, the prompts will inspire you to approach your project from new angles. No outside work is required. You will go home, not with homework, but with the sprouting seeds of new work you will be inspired to continue to nurture.
The intention of this workshop is to generate new work, which means only gentle feedback will be given, and only on work generated during workshop. In order to create a safe space for new work, we will follow some basic guidelines set forth by the Amherst Writer’s and Artists Method. In order to participate, you will need to ensure the safety of yourself and your fellow workshop participants by agreeing to uphold Amherst Writer’s & Artists Method Safety Practices:
Everyone’s writing is treated with equal respect and value.
Writing is kept strictly confidential. What happens in workshop stays in workshop! If you would like to discuss writing with the author outside of workshop, please ask the author’s permission first.
All work will be treated as fiction. The “I” or “narrator” of a piece is always referred to as the “speaker,” or “narrator,” and never assumed to be the writer.
Workshop discussions will be focused on, and limited to, the writing. In order to honor new work, please refrain from any tangents until outside of workshop.
Responses to just-written work reflect what is strong and what stays with you. Baby drafts need to be treated with care.
