Live Seminar

Question Of The Week

Question: "I cannot get to any page in my browser (Internet Explorer).  When I look in my taskbar, I see a message that says I'm connected but have no Internet Access.  How can my computer be connected but I still can't get on the Internet? "

Answer:  If you look at the picture directly above, you'll see exactly what our questioner is talking about.  The computer clearly shows it's connected to a network but it still has no Internet connection.  I realize this is very confusing.  I hope I can clear this up.

To understand the answer, here are some facts you need to know:

1)  Your computer, tablet, etc., does not connect directly to the Internet. Instead, a modem connects to the Internet.

2)  A modem converts the Internet signal into something your computing devices can use.

3)  A modem must be authenticated by your Internet Service Provider (AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, RoadRunner, etc.)  so they know who is using their Internet connection.  (And, so they are sure no one is using it for free.)

4)  If you have wireless service, you may have a modem and a wireless router (2 separate devices) or you may have a modem/wireless router combination (1 device with 2 functions).

5)  If you live in a community where wireless Internet is provided for you, you do not have access to the modem or the router.

Now that you know the facts listed above, let's look at a typical hookup using a modem and a wireless router:

As you can see in this diagram, the Internet first comes into the modem.  From the modem, there's a wire connected to the router and then from the router, each of the computers have a connection.  By the way, the connection to the computers could be a wireless connection instead of a wired (Ethernet) one.

Let's say the connection between the modem and the router went bad.  Your computer would still be connected to the router (so the computer would show "Connected") but you couldn't reach the Internet: 
Same thing is true if the connection between the Internet and the modem went bad.  Your computer would still show "Connected" because it is still connected to the router but you wouldn't be able to reach the Internet because that connection was missing:

If you encounter the situation of being connected but no Internet access, here are some things to consider:
1)  This may be a temporary issue and you should wait 30 minutes and try again.  If you still can't get online, try the next steps. 
2)  If you connect using DSL, the DSL light on the modem MUST be on solid.  If it is blinking, you will NEVER get online.  You need to call your Internet Service Provider (ISP).  You may have a defective modem or something may be wrong with the connection coming into the modem.
3)  If you use a modem and a separate router or a modem/router combination, you may need to reboot them. There is a specific procedure to do this and we have a free tutorial explaining how.  You can read that tutorial HERE.
4)  You may need to restart your computer to regain access to the Internet, even if everything else is working correctly.
