Celebration Sunday: Re-Formation on October 29
Mark your calendars to join us Sunday, October 29 for worship, intergenerational crafting, food, and community on the 500th anniversary of the Reformation!

What is God saying to the church today? This is the question we ask ourselves as we approach the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation this month.

Explore this question with us in worship with multilingual readings, Bach's powerful Cantata no. 126, "A Mighty Fortress," and hymns from Panama to Tanzania, joined by the Advent Chorale and a chamber orchestra.

Respond to this question after worship on your very own quilt square. Write on it. Draw on it. Decorate it. We'll stitch everyone's square into one quilt to unify our individual responses in a beautiful, lasting way.

This intergenerational activity following every worship service will include food and conversation, and be a time for us to grow in community by celebrating the past, testifying to the present, and claiming the next step forward. Let's envision our next Re-Formation together!
You can help make this Celebration Sunday awesome!
Here are three easy ways you can contribute to a special day for everyone.

Like food? Let's make this a real Lutheran potluck with foods representing the diverse people of Advent, and foods from around the world. Bring a dish or drink you love to share.

Speak a language other than English? We'd love to have you read in worship!
Excited already?
We have a 30-second preview video about our question, "What is God saying to the church today?" And we have pictures of what others at Advent are already saying in response to the question. As you look at these, start thinking about what you want to write and draw on your quilt square!
As an urban faith community, it's easy for us to forget that our national Lutheran church body, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is 96% white. It's also easy to think we at Advent have inclusivity and diversity all figured out just because we're "ahead of curve" compared to other Lutheran churches in America.

But how can we be better? How can we do more both within Advent and in the community to promote inclusivity and diversity? What might we do to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse Lutheran church nationwide?

In this reflection on 500 years of Lutheranism, the Rev. Ronald Bonner explores the ELCA's lack of progress toward its vision of inclusion and diversity nationwide. He also talks about reformers in the ELCA who do not just embrace diversity or inclusion but stand against the tide of white supremacy and patriarchy that still flows through the veins of many within this denomination. Dorothy Metzger's Memorial is this Saturday
Dorothy Metzger's memorial service will be at 11am this Saturday here at Advent.

Dorothy Metzger, a longtime member and beloved leader of Advent, passed away from a heart attack on Sunday, September 3rd. She will be missed by many, but her life is certainly one to celebrate. As Kathy Carpenter put it, "She was feisty, full of life and of strong opinions, Lutheran to the core but open and tolerant to those of all faiths or none! An amazing presence."

We are incredibly grateful for the faithful dedication Dorothy shared with our congregation over many decades. Join us in celebrating Dorothy and her life this Saturday.
