Prayers for the Entertainment Industry

Dear HPN members,

We are still in the midst of an unsettling and unknown time in our industry, our country and our world. The most important and productive thing we can all do is PRAY. Actress Loretta Young, a Hollywood star who was a Christian and had a long career in film from 1917 to 1953, said, “I believe that prayer is our powerful contact with the greatest force in the universe.” Let’s connect to the greatest force in the universe this week!

Emmys

Emmy Awards

The 72nd Annual Emmys aired on Sunday, Sept. 20th. It was the “COVID Emmys,” with Jimmy Kimmel hosting alone from the stage of the empty LA Staples Center. It was a unique evening: Awards were delivered to the winners’ homes as their names were announced on TV and “Thank You” speeches were given from dens, living rooms and hotel rooms. The TV Academy supplied a camera and lights to all 100 nominees and they managed 100 Zoom feeds from the remote studio at the Staples Center. Let’s pray for the hearts and lives of the winners as they navigate an unknown future of production and the other actors, producers, directors and crew who create our culture’s television content. May the Lord lead decisions, storylines and professionals in our nation’s upcoming television season.

PRAISES

Jim Caviezel

Jim Caviezel, known worldwide for his portrayal of Jesus in The Passion of the Christ stars in a film that opened last week called Infidel. He plays a blogger who is a Christian and gets arrested in the Middle East for blogging about his faith in Jesus. It's based on various true stories, and Jim is being bold about his own personal love for Jesus. Pray for his spiritual effectiveness as he promotes this film and is very transparent about his faith!

Christians in Hollywood

We praise God for the number of young Hollywood professionals who love Jesus. Our numbers are “surging” and we are so thankful to be watching our Christian community become more visible and more empowering. We want you to pray for continued strength, wisdom, excellence and favor for Jamie and Talitha, two young actors on the Netflix series Away!, and Jake, a singer/songwriter on Spotify’s Top 100 artists. They are only three of hundreds of believers who are working and being salt and light. God is moving in Hollywood! Remember that, often when things look darker, the Christians rise up! So, never lose hope! As you pray, check out these opportunities for Christians in Hollywood:

Living Wages for Entertainment Workers

While thousands of entertainment industry professionals are losing work, United Talent Agency has implemented an across-the-board pay raise for hourly employees, benefitting mostly the agents’ assistants who have notoriously been overworked and underpaid in our business. This is a needed step of integrity, and we are praising God that this could bolster an industry-wide trend.

LA Live Theatre Community

Pray for the LA Theatre community and especially the Actor’s Co-Op, as they struggle to survive in this year of closed theatres. Actor’s Co-Op is a vital part of our Christian entertainment community in LA, and they have been serving the LA theatre audience for 27 powerful years of live theatre. This year they had to go remote and are trying to stay open during this COVID season. Please pray for God’s provision and favor, and for their leadership to make wise and creative decisions to stay afloat. We ask the Lord to do a miracle to keep live theatre alive in Los Angeles.

Disney Layoffs

We need your prayers for the thousands of people in our industry who are losing work. The Walt Disney Corporation just laid off over 28,000 employees after being furloughed for six months, due to the economic impact of COVID-19. We need to ask the Lord to supply jobs for these people and to give wisdom to decision-makers in these difficult days.

Movie Theater Alternatives

While producers and distributors scramble to find venues for their films to screen, Disney decided to launch some of its films on Apple TV and iTunes. We pray that Hollywood’s leaders can find new ways to make entertainment available while movie theaters stay closed in our major cities.

Social Media's Impact

Please pray for the impact that social media is having, not only on our children but on everyone in our world. Many people are not aware of the profound influence that social media has on all of us, so as you pray, you may want to check out a new Netflix special called The Social Dilemma. It is incredibly insightful, informative and disturbing as it lays out the power of social media platforms, their algorithms, how addictive they are and how they alter our lives. As Christians we need to understand our world and be ”in” it but not “of” it.

Healing from Childhood Trauma

Please pray for Paris Hilton, Drew Barrymore and the hundreds of other Hollywood professionals who, as adults, are still seeking healing from child abuse and traumatic upbringings. Pray that these professionals would not turn to addiction or other coping mechanisms, but would instead bring their wounds into the light to be healed. We need to have compassion for the celebrities who are trying to hang on and get healing and affirmation while being watched and judged by their “fans.” Outsiders think living in Hollywood is full of glitz and glamour, when in reality it’s a city of broken people needing love and often not knowing how or where to find it. Your prayers can bring healing!
