Dear friends,
President’s Day celebrations were in evidence across the Jewish Home Family this week! At the Jewish Home of Rockleigh we had an American Art program on the Kaplen 2 unit. Elders used watercolor paints, blue tape and acrylic paint to create some real masterpieces. The program ended with the singing of “God Bless America.” On the Seiden unit our elders enjoyed patriotic tunes and on Rubin we had Presidential Trivia and fun facts. In the afternoon volunteer Florence Poris offered a great session of Jewish Home University entitled “Remember the Ladies” that focused on the First Ladies throughout our history. At Jewish Home4 Assisted Living we had a great lecture on Abraham Lincoln and showed the film “Lincoln.” We also enjoyed apple, blueberry and cherry cobblers over ice cream as our “red, white and blue” treat for both staff and elders. One special highlight of the week has been an amazing bust of Lincoln that has been on display. It was sculpted by John Calabro whose wife, Anita, loaned it to us for the week. Gallen Center participants not only learned about Presidential history but talked about their favorite presidents. The winner—FDR!

In the Gallen Day Center this week we enjoyed a wonderful program of piano and violin music provided by Mr. Zhang’s music students. Jewelry club was also a big hit for both men and women. The women made jewelry for themselves and the men made something for the special women in their lives. Tuesday morning Boxing Program was so packed with participants that we ran out of room! Good problem to have and one that has us planning to add more boxing to the schedule. We also had a session of Delay the Disease and our Drama Club met to begin planning for our Purim performance. We celebrated February birthdays with music and dancing, as well as delicious chocolate cake. We also had some great options in our Community Choice program as well as a visit from Florence Poris who led us in a lively game of Brain Busters. Men’s group met and talked about childhood memories and we also had a great session of LaughActive Yoga. We finished the week with Sing Out featuring Margi Elias and Presidential reflections with Rabbi Feld.

Bob is not new to the Jewish Home Family but this is a new role for him and everyone is delighted to have him on board! On Tuesday we began with exercise with Patrick and an interesting program on Thomas Edison entitled “America’s Greatest Inventor.” We had a patriotic themed Happy Hour and another lively game of Rummikub. Attention Family Members: Our newest volunteer, Ella K., is working on a project that she has named “Face to Face”. This tech savvy student is connecting interested residents with their loved ones via Skype and FaceTime. If your loved one is interested in conversing “face to face” with his or her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or friends, Ella will make this happen for you. Ella is available on Sunday mornings, provides her own laptop, and makes all the necessary arrangements. Your loved one can be a part of this exciting new program that has the potential to bring family members and friends closer together!
