Kolleen Sullivan loves teaching, and she cannot talk about her classroom and what she does without a bright, contagious smile on her face. She believes that every child is capable of learning and that teachers have to believe in them and encourage them to keep trying. “They need to know that I, as their teacher, have the confidence in them so that they can do it!”
Her enthusiasm and positive attitude are reflected in her classroom--a colorful, inviting space filled with energy and interaction. Students love going to see Ms. Sullivan, who currently serves as the Reading Specialist at Shady Grove Elementary School. She incorporates lots of questioning and creative methods that engage young students learning to read. Students know that she truly cares for and believes in them. Ms. Sullivan uses a whole child centered approach and believes that building a supportive relationship with each student is critical for student achievement.
Ms. Sullivan wears many ‘hats.’ She is a teacher leader who realizes the power of collaboration and loves to share and work with colleagues. Trained in a variety of programs, approaches, and strategies, she is a valuable resource willing to mentor and offer support to other teachers.
Ms. Sullivan was born and raised in upstate New York before her family moved to North Carolina. She earned associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees and has four areas of certification in teaching. In addition to serving as a reading specialist, she also has experience in 4th and 5th grade and exceptional children’s self-contained classrooms. As a student herself, she worked hard and was inspired and encouraged by her parents along the way. Today, the 17-year veteran teacher sees herself as students’ ‘cheerleader’ in their academic challenges and accomplishments.
Ms. Sullivan is a tremendous asset to Shady Grove students and staff. She says, “I will always do the best that I can to provide all of my students an outstanding education, and I consider myself blessed to be doing what I do each day.”
Congratulations and special thanks to Kolleen Sullivan, Davie County’s District Teacher of the Year!
