Dear friends,

One of our favorite celebrations across the Jewish Home Family is Purim.  Not only do we love to gather residents for the Megillah reading and to hear the story of Esther, and not only do we all love the hamantaschen which are plentiful right now, but we totally love the costumes and the fun.  At the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, we held our annual costume parade on Thursday afternoon and saw the creativity of our team in full flower!  We had staff and residents dressed in everything from Mickey Mouse to the 1960’s, from the tropics to dominos.  The Gallen Day Center participants also took part in the festivities and it really was a festive afternoon all around.  Jewish Home Assisted Living also got in the spirit with  the Megillah reading as well as many staff and residents dressed in costumes.

This week, Lauren Levant and I had the pleasure of hosting one of our monthly lunch meetings at Jewish Home Assisted Living.  We meet with residents some months and staff other months and it’s been a great way to connect and get feedback.  There is no set agenda for any of these sessions, we get to know each other a bit and then we talk about whatever is on people’s minds. And if there are no topics that spring up, we have a list of questions that we use to get things rolling.  We’ve learned a lot of things this way and surfaced a number of great new ideas.

Other great events this week have included a resident baking event at Jewish Home Assisted Living.  What were they baking? Well, hamantaschen of course!  The residents also filled Misloach Manot bags and they distributed them to their fellow residents after Purim services.

In the Gallen Center, we had lots of music on the agenda. On Monday we had “The Jacksons” for singing and dancing and on Wednesday we had a visit from DJ Larry who played music from the 1980’s. I also had the chance to chat with Gallen Center participants this week. My topic? Our planned Jewish Home Family Mission to Israel scheduled for October 9-19. We wanted to be a part of the Israel at 70 celebrations and we have begun to line up participants for this wonderful adventure! Not sure what this is all about? Watch the video from our 2015 Mission here and feel free to call with any questions.

Residents at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh are deep into rehearsals for the annual spring musical performance.  This year’s show is Oklahoma and there is a lot of excitement about the upcoming performances that will take place in May.  We’ll be sharing dates soon so you can mark your calendars.

Interested in a wonderful volunteer assignment?  One that you can do in a single day, just a few hours really, and make a difference in someone’s life?  Here’s a great one, be a part of delivering holiday meals to seniors in our community.  Our Passover meal deliveries will take place on Friday, March 30 and will include a full meal that these elderly folks can have for Seder.  Delivering the meals means picking them up at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh and following a simple route to around six or homes or apartments.  It’s a very rewarding thing to do and the recipients of the meals are so very grateful.  For more information, please email Stacey Orden, our Director of Volunteers at

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of participating in AJAS Speaks.  AJAS is the Association of Jewish Aging Services which represents Jewish senior care organizations across North America.  AJAS Speaks is modeled on the TED talk model and has become a part of our annual conference.  Our conference theme was “redefining home” and all of our AJAS Speaks presentations were on that theme, mine at creating a sense of home at end of life.  Here’s the video below if you’d like to view it (accompanying slides are here). As always, your feedback is welcome.

All the best,
