Looking Back on 175 years of
Family Farming on Nantucket

It is hard enough to adjust to the retirement of one employee without having to adjust to a second one!   As we say our farewells to our Head Grower, Pete Smith, we must do the same to his wife Hilary.  I used to call Hilary my PWDEE (Person Who Does Everything Else).   When we hired Hilary I was elated to have someone working beside me in the greenhouse.  I think we were both born with the same work ethic, and we quickly found we had similar upbringings in upstate New York State…not in the city or its suburbs, but in the real Upstate: the Southern Tier and Western areas of New York State.  She accompanied me on our buying trips and was a great source of information not to mention fun.  I vividly remember one trip we took into southern N.H.  On our return home we stopped at a local orchard’s roadside stand and bought a fresh fall apple to snack on.  As I drove off we each took our apple and without words simultaneously began to polish it to a glistening sheen on the leg of our blue jeans.  We laughed hysterically acknowledging a well-learned childhood habit!

But more seriously Hilary was a bridge between the ideas we had and the necessary stages we needed to go thru to accomplish our goals. Whether it was in production, from seed to plant, or marketing a product, or writing about it, she was involved.  And because of that, as I decreased my involvement, I had the luxury of knowing things were under control.  So thank you, Hilary!  We’ll miss you.  Phil and I wish that your happiest dreams of “Life after Bartlett’s” will come true!   And tell Pete, the latch string that’s out for him?  It’s meant for you, too!
