Dear DIBELS User,
Does your state require measures of Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) and/or Spelling as part of screening students for reading difficulties such as dyslexia? The authors of DIBELS at Dynamic Measurement Group are pleased to announce the early release of two new measures, DMG RAN and DMG Spelling, for use in grades K and 1.
RAN is a task that involves quickly and accurately naming repeated sets of familiar items. The DMG RAN measure is based on established procedures for creating and interpreting RAN tasks used in decades of research by many researchers. DMG RAN includes both a RAN Objects task and a RAN Letters task. In addition, a RAN Numbers task will be available for students who are unable to name the letters.
The DMG Spelling measure is based on the principles of General Outcome Measurement, as well as the established procedures used for Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) Spelling in which students are required to write letters in the correct sequence to spell grade-level words.
Both measures will be available for free download to DIBELSnet® customers entering DIBELS Next® data during the 2018-2019 school year. A brief online training on how to administer and score both measures will also be provided for free. We recommend that the measures be administered by trained DIBELS Next assessors. More information will be available in DIBELSnet by August 15th.
Initial interpretation of results will be based on your local district norms in DIBELSnet. Additional interpretive information will be released as it becomes available.
If your district would be interested in participating in further research on the new measures, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
