WELLNESS BY DESIGN

Clodagh Design Artistic Director Peter O’Kennedy (3rd from Left) was a recent panelist at the HOTEC design conference in Scottsdale Arizona, where he spoke about “wellness by design.” Wellness by design is our vision and mission for how to create spaces where people can be their best selves.

"Hotec at The Phoenician was a wonderful event, and our panel discussion on Biophilia could not have been more timely, said Peter. There was so much interest from the hospitality sector. We are, thankfully, on an exponentially upward-curving arc of awareness of our physical and emotional dependence on the natural environment, and the urgency with which we need to protect and nurture it."

MIRAVAL AUSTIN

As seen in American Spa Magazine this Summer! The recently opened Life in Balance Spa is inspired by the surrounding nature preserve and incorporates a variety of natural elements, such as rope and wood. One of the highlights is the new quiet lounge, which offers views of Lake Travis.

THE THORN TREE PROJECT TREASURER MAJA SERDAREVIC

Do we think it's possible that our Thorn Tree Project Treasurer Maja Serdarevic's love for Africa first began when the circus came to her hometown of Sarajevo in Bosnia?   Here's Maja as a young lady with her very first "elephant" experience. (All she really remembers is that the elephant's skin felt very scratchy!)  And perhaps this short childhood ride prompted her love of Kenya, The Thorn Tree Project and all things Africa?

RECIPE: GRILLED CABBAGE WEDGES WITH SPICY LIME DRESSING

PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES
COOK TIME: 10 TO 14 MINUTES
SERVES: 8 AS A SIDE DISH

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup  freshly squeezed lime juice (from about 3 limes)
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped
1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 head green cabbage
Grapeseed or canola oil
Lime wedges, for serving

INSTRUCTIONS

1.Heat a gas or charcoal grill to direct, high heat. Meanwhile, whiz the limes, olive oil, fish sauce, garlic, cilantro, salt, cayenne, and sugar in a small chopper or blender until the sauce is pale orange and the garlic is pulverized; set aside.
2.Remove the loosest, toughest outer leaves from the cabbage, and cut into 8 evenly sized wedges. Do not remove the stalk or inner core. Lightly brush the wedges with grapeseed or canola oil.
3.Place the wedges on the grill. Cover and grill until the edges of each layer are blackened and the cabbage is beginning to soften, 5 to 7 minutes per side. The cabbage is ready when it is beginning to wilt, but is still firm in the middle. (This will also be somewhat a matter of taste; I like it fairly crispy still, but you may prefer it more well-done.) If necessary, turn the heat down or move the wedges to a cooler part of the grill so they don't burn. But don't be afraid of those blackened edges; you want a lot of grill and char marks on the cabbage to give it smoky flavor.
4.Transfer the cabbage wedges to a serving platter. Pour the dressing over the wedges and serve immediately, with wedges of lime to garnish. Serve and enjoy!

RESTAURANT: PUBLIC KITCHEN

As a vegan I always take notice when a restaurant is interested enough to provide interesting and delicious all vegetable food that does not feel like an afterthought.
Jean-Georges Vongerichten and his team have passed my test in spades. Not only is it vegan friendly, but quite possibly one of the most romantic eateries in town. Here's to more deliciously vegan and vegan friendly restaurants in NYC, including Jean- Georges eponymous Central Park West flagship which has a new vegan tasting menu!

ARTIST: TARA HARDY

I first became intrigued with the work of Montreal-based mixed-media illustrator Tara Hardy when I was facing a massive, colorful and breathtaking wall mural of hers at a client’s apartment in New York City. It was mesmerizing, and then I discovered that it is reversible, turn it around and there’s another equally brilliant image behind the main one!

Tara Hardy’s passions are environmental, animal welfare and human rights issues, and they are visible, yet subtle, in all of her work. What captures me about her illustrations is their profound seriousness, but a seriousness that’s always juxtaposed with a hint of playfulness and whimsy. “Deeply imaginative” is the perfect descriptor for a Tara Hardy original work.

Tara, who studied fine arts, illustration and graphic design, is a passionate and dedicated award-winning artist. It’s in her genes: she’s the granddaughter of Ray Mead, one of Canada’s pioneers in contemporary abstract painting.

Chances are if your eye recently caught something magical dominating the backdrops of popular programs such as “Succession” and “Younger,” it’s a Tara Hardy original!

FILM: ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD

The new Quentin Tarantino film about 1960's Hollywood certainly deserves all of the accolades it has been getting. The kind of film that you really have to experience in a dark theater. Brilliantly accurate period details, both common and obscure, incredible acting from Leo, Brad, and Margo and the kind of surprise ending that only Tarantino would think to deliver. My top pick for 2019 so far!

FILM: ROCKETMAN

I very much enjoyed the film Rocketman about Sir Elton John. Every moment is riveting, inspiring, interesting and sometimes just plain sad and unsettling. But thankfully  the overall tone is uplifting and entertaining.   It’s sure to be up for a bunch of Oscars!

BOOKS: SALLY ROONEY'S NORMAL PEOPLE

Sally Rooney’s “Normal People” is a must-read.  Nominated as Irish Novel Of The Year 2018 and named Waterstone’s Book Of The Year 2018, it’s the story of a young man and woman who hail from polar opposite backgrounds.

Exploring the subtleties of class, the electricity of first love, and the complex entanglements of family and friendship, it will soon become a BBC TV  12-part series!

PRODUCTS: NANO TOWELS

Clodagh has an entity living inside her whom she calls her “inner housewife”

What makes the housewife happy is the discovery of cleaning , kitchen and prepping products and gadgets that simplify her life. Here is one that she is crazy about:

" I’ve been hearing so much anecdotally about Nano Towels (NanoTowel.com) and so I thought I might pass on some of the excellent reviews: it’s a new non-toxic product which has the ability to clean anything without using soaps, chemicals or even paper towels.  Basically with Nano Towels you can clean your home using only water!    Friends and colleagues who have tried Nano Towels say you just need to spray the surface with water and then wipe and buff with the Nano Towel.   So far, so good, with zero bad reviews, so I thought I would pass on this Wellness Tip direct to you from “Clodagh’s Inner Housewife.”  Let me know how you they worked for you!
