Vacation Bible School
Is your congregation holding a VBS or other youth program this summer? We'd love to know when it's happening this summer so we can pray for you and we would like to gather your ministry stories, hear about your volunteers and see how kid's are growing in faith. Photos, videos, and summaries are all welcome during/after your program. Contact Val Harlynn harlynn@seiasynod.org with your information and we'll share it with other congregations around the synod.

Nepal Earthquake: Krishna’s story
Krishna has lived in the village of Jaubari Dhansar her entire life. Located in the remote Gorkha District of Nepal, it is among the hardest hit by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal April 25.

In fact, the village is so remote that LWR team had to switch from regular four-wheel drive SUV to a customized Jeep designed to navigate the rough terrain. It took more than two hours to drive less than 20 miles, with no sight of paved road for most of the trip.  It takes the villagers more than four hours and costs $2 in bus rides to get to the nearest town.

Krishna says she feels lucky that her family – including her husband, two sons and pregnant daughter-in-law – weren't harmed in the quake. It struck during a time when many people in the village are usually outside sitting or working. Read the rest

Liberians give thanks after country declared Ebola-free
Tenacity, determination and faith – that's how the Rev. Andrea L. Walker described members and leaders of the Lutheran Church in Liberia, as well as people of the West Africa country, in response to their efforts to become Ebola-free. Walker is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's area program director for Madagascar, West and Central Africa.

Walker returned May 13 from a trip to Liberia. She was on one of the first few flights to depart Liberia for the United States since the World Health Organization declared Liberia free of the virus. "Sierra Leone is still not Ebola-free. People there need our continued prayers," she said, although the epidemic is slowing down there with less than 10 new cases reported since the week of May 10.

"When Ebola was considered a crisis in August 2014, the people of Liberia took it very seriously, including the leaders and members of the Lutheran Church in Liberia," said Walker. "People took up new practices. Instead of shaking hands to greet one another, they offered a thumbs-up, fist-bump or would place their hand over their heart." Read more

Save the Date!
The annual Southeastern Iowa Synod Fall Theological Conference will be held September 27-29, 2015, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames.  The speakers for this year’s event will be Rozella White, Program Director for Young Adult Ministries for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; and Jeremy Myers, Associate Professor in Youth and Family Ministry at Augsburg College, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The theme will be “Being Public in the Name of Jesus.” Here is what they say about their presentations: “Christendom is waning and that might be a good thing! The love of Christ frees us to serve our neighbors and neighborhoods. But our neighbors aren’t coming to church all that much anymore. So the locus of work might need to shift from the sanctuary to the public square. Together we will explore ways to make this move into the public square as congregations and as leaders.”

Registration information will be available in July.  Plan now to attend!

Upcoming administration workshops
Administration and finance are important to the health of your congregation. Having a firm grasp on your congregation’s finances will have a positive impact on your local ministry; as well as the ministries that we do together as the ELCA. And understanding your congregation’s tax and reporting responsibilities will ensure that you remain in good standing as a non-profit corporation.

The Southeastern Iowa Synod is offering four workshops to help with administration and finance in your congregation. These workshops are provided at no cost to congregations of the Southeastern Iowa Synod.  Pre-registration is encouraged. See the full list of dates and times.

For questions, or to register contact Kathy Smith, Associate for Administration, smith@seiasynod.org, 319-338-1273.
