Sixth Sunday of Easter

What Can You Imagine?
Acts. 17:29-31

When the youth began to contemplate their Youth Sunday theme, and to consider participating in the current sermon series on doubt and questioning, this question was raised: “Are there any questions in that series about what we can learn from other religions?” Well. There is now! The youth have spent the last four weeks in Sunday School learning about Islam and Judaism, and have welcomed guest speakers from both religions to their Sunday School class. They plan to move on to other religions as well. As it happens, the scripture reading for this Sunday builds on the one from last Sunday, where Paul addressed the Athenians in response to seeing their idol “to an unknown god,” while commending them on “how religious they are in every way.”  And while verse 29 tells us that God is not created by our art or by our imagination, there is much that we can imagine in this pluralistic world. Imagine no more arguing, imagine enough food for all, imagine a safe home for every child, imagine a world at peace, imagine focusing on our similarities, rather than our differences. What can you imagine? We look forward to hearing from our young people this Sunday – and hope to see you there!

Here is a LINK to last week’s sermon.

U.S. refugee resettlements so far this fiscal year are VERY LOW.  Sharon Stanley-Rea from the Disciples Home Ministry shared in a recent newsletter:  “As we approach the "half year" for refugee resettlement in this fiscal year on March 31st...the U.S. has resettled less than 10,000 refugees (not even 20%) of our national 45,000 admissions goal for fiscal year 2018!  Already, this 45,000 annual goal is the LOWEST in our nation's resettlement history, at a time when there are over 22 million refugees worldwide.”
