Reflections from April Polley

Director of Congregational Health Services

Do you remember the May pole when you were in elementary school? Or perhaps making a nosegay to hang on a friend or neighbor’s front door on the first day of May? Definitely a quieter, gentler time!

May also brings a couple special days for me. The first is, of course, Mother’s Day, when I celebrate not only my Mother and Mother-in-law, but also the gifts God has given me. In the Old Testament, there is a woman named Hannah who did not have any children. She cried out to God and He blessed her with Samuel first, who she dedicated to the Lord, and then several other children. I was Hannah and did not have children. God brought me a daughter, a son, and subsequently their spouses, and three lovely grandchildren. Mother’s Day is a special day. Although you may not have children of your own, you have special people and spiritual children in your life.

The other significant time in May is National Nurses Day/Week. Nurse’s day originated as a celebration of Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Nurse Nightingale is the founder and leader of professional nursing. She took care of wounded soldiers during the Crimean War, under horrific conditions. If you have not heard her story, read a short synopsis of her life on the internet. You will be amazed!

On May 9th at 4:30 p.m., we will have a “Refresher” Course for Faith Community Nurses and we will be honoring the nurses who attend, as well as our founder, Florence Nightingale. If you haven’t signed up yet, please RSVP today! Please send your questions and concerns and we will address them.

Happy Mother’s Day and Nurses Day – do something special just for you!!
